SSC CGL Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Eligibility Criteria

SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL)

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) holds Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL), for recruitment to different posts in various Ministries / Departments and organizations. The Examination consists of four tiers viz. Tier-I -- Computer Based Examination; Tier -II -- Computer Based Examination; Tier -III -- Pen and Paper Mode (Descriptive paper) and Tier-IV -- Computer Proficiency Test/ Skill Test (wherever applicable)/ Document Verification.

Age Qualification (SSC CGL)

Age criteria for various posts that fall under CGL are as follows: 

A.  In the Indian Audit & Accounts Department under CAG: Group ‘B’Gazetted (Non-Ministerial)
  • Assistant Audit Officer: Not exceeding 30 years.
  • Assistant Accounts Officer: Not exceeding 30 years.

B. Central Secretariat Service : Group “B”
  • Assistant Section Officer: 20-30 years

C. Intelligence Bureau: Group “B”
  • Assistant Section Officer: Not exceeding 30 years.

D. Ministry of Railway: Group “B”
  • Assistant Section Officer: 20-30 years

E. Ministry of External Affairs: Group “B”
  • Assistant Section Officer: 20-30 years

F. AFHQ: Group “B”
  • Assistant Section Officer: 20-30 years

G. Other Ministries/Departments/Organizations: Group “B”
  • Assistant: 18-27 years
  • Assistant: 20-30 years
  • Assistant Section Officer: Not exceeding 30 years.
  • Assistant/Superintendent: Not exceeding 30 years.

H. CBDT: Group “C”
  • Inspector of Income Tax: Not exceeding 30 years.

I. CBEC: Group “B”
  • Inspector, (Central Excise) : 18-27 years
  • Inspector (Preventive Officer): 18-27 years
  • Inspector (Examiner) : 18-27 years

J. Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue: Group “B”
  • Assistant Enforcement Officer: Up to 30 years

K. Central Bureau of Investigation: Group “B”
  • Sub Inspector: 20-30 years

L. Department of Post: Group “B”
  • Inspector Posts: 18-27 years

M. Offices under CAG: Group “B”
  • Divisional Accountant: Not exceeding 30 years

N. Central Bureau of Narcotics: Group “B”
  • Inspector: 18-27 years

O. National Investigation Agency (NIA): Group “B”
  • Sub Inspector: Up to 30 years

Educational qualifications for Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination: (SSC CGL)

A) Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer:


  • a) Essential Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute
  • b) Desirable Qualifications: Chartered Accountant or cost & Management Accountant or Company Secretary or Masters I Commerce or Masters in Business Studies or a Masters in Business Administration (Finance) or Masters in Business Economics.



NOTE: During the period of probation direct recruits shall have to qualify the “Subordinate Audit Service Examination” in respective branches for confirmation and regular appointment as Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer.

B) Junior Statistical Officer: 


  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level

OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.

C) All other Posts: 


  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or equivalent. The candidates appearing in the final year of their graduation can also apply.

Application Fees : (SSC CGL)


The application fees are Rs.100. The fee is exempted for all Women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Physically Handicapped, and Ex-Servicemen eligible for reservation, as per Government orders.


 CGL Syllabus and Exam Pattern (SSC CGL)

Tier I: Pattern for the Exam  (SSC CGL)

The Computer Based Examination consists of objective type papers of total 60 minutes.
  • i)  General Intelligence & Reasoning
  • ii) General Awareness
  • iii) Quantitative Aptitude
  • iv) English Language and Comprehension
* Total 100 questions of 200 marks

Tier II: Pattern for the Exam:  (SSC CGL)

The Computer Based Examination consists of objective type papers of 2 hours for all and 2 hours 40 mins for visually handicapped.
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Language and Comprehension
  • Statistics
  • General Studies (Finance and Economics)
There is a negative marking of 0.50 for each wrong answer in Tier-I. In respect of Tier-II, the negative marking system of 0.25 for each wrong answer in paper II (English Language &Comprehension) of Tier-II and 0.50 for each wrong answer in Paper-I, Paper III and Paper IV of Tier II

Tier III : (SSC CGL)


  • Pen and Paper based Descriptive Paper in English/Hindi (writing of Essays/ Letter/Applications etc.) Total 100 marks in 60 minutes

  • The merit is prepared on overall performance in Tier-I, Tier-II, and Tier-III. However, the candidate will need to qualify all the tiers i.e Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier-III separately. There will be no sectional cut-off.

Tier-IV: (SSC CGL)


  • Computer Proficiency Test/ Skill Test (wherever applicable)

  • For the post of Tax Assistants (Central Excise & Income Tax): Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) at 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depression per hour on Computer. The “Data Entry Speed” Skill Test at 2000 (two thousand) key depressions for a duration of 15 minutes is of qualifying nature. A computer is provided by the Commission at the Centre/venue notified for the purpose. Document Verification is also be conducted as per the provisions of the notice of examination.
